Madagascar Food Poisoning Fatalities Climb to Twenty

(MENAFN) In Madagascar’s capital suburb of Antananarivo, a deadly food poisoning event has claimed 20 lives, the government announced Wednesday.

The official statement emphasized the severity of the case, declaring, "As the poisoning was intentional, the perpetrators must be punished." Authorities have already detained five individuals linked to the incident as the investigation continues.

The tragedy unfolded last Saturday during a birthday party in the rural Ambohimalaza district, where about 50 attendees gathered. Several guests quickly experienced alarming symptoms such as dizziness and blurred vision.

The hospital treating the majority of the victims reported that 20 patients remain in critical condition.

Minister of Public Health Zely Randriamanantany confirmed to reporters that those affected have been administered anti-poisoning treatments.
